The Rise in the Number of Children and Adolescents Who Exhibit Problematic Behaviors: Multiple CausesA new report by the Vanier Institute for the Family speaks of the context in which children have developed dramatically increased problematic, anti-social behaviour. It very strongly emphasizes the importance of parents and exercising loving authority over their children. It systematically describes the problems of anti-social media, materialism, peer-attachment, and eroded community bonds for children's development. That said, the report shies away from recommending increased financial support for parents (even for lower income families) as a means to recognize the importance of parents and also to facilitate the recommendations for increased parental supervision and community relationship building. Nor do the recommendations ask for government to legislate restrictions (as in the past)on advertising targeting children. |
